Created in Austria by a process patented by Daniel Swarovski in the early 19th century using hydroelectricity, the faceted beads most people associte with the name were inspired by the northern lights. While collaborating in the 1950's with designer Christian Dior, Swarovski created the Aurora Borealis effect with the crystals.
